Creating a Journal That Inspires Action
I recently stumbled upon an old diary of mine. It was filled with a chaotic stream of consciousness — raw thoughts, the emptiness after a breakup, and restless dreams of quitting my job to travel the world. In the rush of daily life, I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I last recorded my own story.
When I couldn’t even recall how a week had passed, I found myself turning to my photo library. A single photo of a meal or a friend’s face was enough to trigger a vivid memory of the day.
That’s when it clicked: what if we could capture the essence of a day with just one photo and a few short lines? This simple realization — that a record doesn’t have to be long to be meaningful — was the beginning of JournalCircle.

The tactile feel of a black pen on white paper
We wanted the app to feel like writing with a black pen on a crisp, white sheet of paper. This led us to a minimalist Black & White palette. We also implemented a left-tab navigation, which has since become a signature layout for our identity at Genau Factory. The design was meant to be a quiet stage for your life to take the spotlight.
Capturing hidden stories and fleeting thoughts
As we built the app, we realized that our daily meals hold more stories than we think. A single photo of a meal is rarely just about the food; it contains the entire context of the day — who we were with, the atmosphere of the place, and the specific moment we were in. This “Food Journal” became a way to archive those rich, unspoken layers of our lives through a simple image.

We also created “Definition” for those days when a familiar word suddenly feels different. Instead of letting those fleeting shifts in perspective slip away, we wanted a space to redefine them in our own terms.
Lately, the real joy has been exploring how others define the world. The community is filled with raw and relatable takes on life — words like “Ex-boyfriend,” “People to avoid,” or “Breakup.” Every now and then, I find myself bursting into laughter at a definition so witty and sharp that I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Finding the answers hidden in your subconscious
We also drew inspiration from a classic scene in Friends. In one episode, Phoebe helps Joey make a difficult decision — choosing between Rachel and Monica — by playing a rapid-fire association game. After several rounds of trivial choices, she suddenly drops the real question. Caught off guard, Joey blurts out the truth before his logical brain can even intervene.
This sparked the idea for MindCard. When you record a worry or a dilemma, the app presents a series of related keywords. By forcing you to choose between them quickly, MindCard bypasses your hesitation and helps you pinpoint the actual root of your anxiety. It’s about uncovering the answer that was already inside you, waiting to be found.

Despite our digital world, there’s a certain nostalgia for the tactile feel of a paper diary. To bridge this gap, we made it possible to print your records directly from your Mac or iPad. It’s our way of letting you hold your digital memories in your hands, bringing the warmth of analog paper back into your daily routine.

When records become a trigger for action
My personal favorite is the goal-tracking feature. It allows you to link your daily entries to your yearly goals, documenting exactly what you’ve done to move the needle. One of my goals this year was “spending quality time with people.” Interestingly, the simple desire to have something meaningful to write in my diary prompted me to be more proactive — reaching out to friends first and suggesting meetups I might have otherwise postponed. It’s a fascinating cycle: the act of recording doesn’t just capture my life; it actually inspires me to live it more fully.

A “stingy” AI and the weekly battle for points
When the weekend rolls around, you unlock the “Weekly Review” — a summary that analyzes your entries to provide three key themes, a one-line reflection, and a “Positivity Index.” This index, powered by AI, evaluates the words and context of your week to give you a score out of 100. For a while, our marketer and I had a bit of a friendly rivalry over this score. I distinctly remember the AI being surprisingly stingy with its points; no matter how hard we tried to stay upbeat, getting a high score was much tougher than we expected!

I also have a soft spot for the Voice Diary. While it can be awkward to hear your own voice, sound captures emotions that text simply cannot. Listening to the subtle traces of sadness, tension, or joy in my own voice brings a sense of presence that takes me right back to that moment.
One of the most memorable App Store reviews said that the app’s design was so beautiful it made them want to write more often. To that user, thank you again.
It doesn’t have to be JournalCircle. But I hope everyone who reads this finds a way to start a daily journaling habit. Because even the smallest, most mundane moments of our lives are stories worth keeping.
